Border-Crossing Goes Digital
Canada’s trade industry is in the process of updating the requirements for customs in all modes of transportation.
The Advanced Commercial Information initiative or e-Manifest as it is more commonly known is a transformational initiative that will modernize and improve cross-border commercial procedures. When fully implemented, e-Manifest will require carriers, freight forwarders and importers to electronically transmit advance commercial information to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) within prescribed mode-specific time frames. E-Manifest will be a virtually paperless process that starts before shipments reach the border. Carriers will be required to become certified and equipped with the proper transmission systems.
Due to the massive undertaking of transitioning the border-crossing protocol, e-Manifest has been delayed from becoming a mandatory requirement in the highway mode. However, like everything in our digital world, the trade industry must evolve and move forward with more efficient processes. Ultimately, e-Manifest will become mandatory for highway carriers so it is important to get a head start in staying informed about the requirements and to looking into becoming certified in the near future.
To help facilitate this transition, Willson International has partnered with a third party service provider to help our customers with the certification process and to transmit the manifest data. Additionally, below is a resource that has all the key information to stay updated on e-Manifest. Importers you are next!
