CUSMA: Key Resources from the Government of Canada

The Government of Canada provides a number of resources for Canadian companies looking to find out more about the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA)—aka, “the new NAFTA”—and how it will impact their business:

The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) helps Canadian businesses expand their reach with programs, services, and an on-the-ground network in more than 160 countries around the world, including 19 offices in the U.S. and MexicoContact a trade commissioner in a regional trade office in Canada or abroad—for expert assistance for all your company’s export needs.

The Can Export SMEs program provides up to $75,000 to help Canadian small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) bring their products and services to new international markets. The program provides expert advice on business, legal and tax matters, and covers up to 75% of the costs for a variety of export marketing activities:
  business travel
  market research
  trade events
  intellectual property protection

Read CUSMA’s Fact Sheets for specific information for SMEscustoms administration and trade facilitation and temporary entry, as well as trade and Indigenous peoples.

Find practical information related to customs rules and procedures on the Canada Border Services Agency’s CUSMA website.

For specific inquiries regarding the rules of origin, please contact the Tariffs and Goods Market Access.

The Canada Tariff Finder is your tool for finding the tariff rate your company can claim when exporting to the U.S. and Mexico. It is easy to use and you can search the product by keyword or harmonized system (HS) code.

Keep an eye out for trade‑focused events and information sessions on CUSMA, both online and in locations across Canada.

If there are questions on the text of the agreement itself, contact Global Affairs Canada’s North America Trade Policy team.

For additional details regarding the agreement, visit Canada’s official CUSMA webpage.

COVID-19 is a global challenge. Keeping our supply chains moving is important for maintaining the health and wellbeing of citizens and businesses. While the Canada - U.S. border is now closed to non-essential traffic, it is still open for trade and commerce. We are committed to doing our part for global supply chains.

We are protecting the health and safety of our employees. They are working from home, except for critical functions that require certain equipment or managing paper/courier flow. In those cases we are following social distancing guidelines.

We are open and available to assist you, and key players in your supply chains. Our dedicated staff are available 24/7 and our brokerage and logistics experts are available to help you make adjustments to your supply chain, if necessary.

We encourage you to check out the government programs available to families, businesses, exporters and importers. And, while respecting the need for social distancing we encourage everyone, including our staff, to reach out and remain connected to family, friends, colleagues and customers.

Stay safe.
