Additional Relief for Certain Steel Goods

The Government of Canada has announced an Order-in-Council concerning certain steel goods that were in transit to Canada prior to October 25th, 2018.  This OIC permits importers to apply for remission of the safeguard surtaxes announced on October 11th, 2018 on these items, as described in Customs Notice 18-24.  This remission, called the In-Transit Steel Goods Remission Order (Order), SOR/2018-288, came into effect on December 17, 2018.

The safeguard surtaxes announced on October 11th and effective October 25th imposed a 25% surtax on seven steel products: heavy plate, concrete reinforcing bar, energy tubular products, hot-rolled sheet, pre-painted steel, stainless steel wire, and wire rod.  This new Order-in-Council will remit surtax paid on these seven products if certain conditions are met, related to the time these goods were in-transit
