March 16, 2020 – COVID-19 CBSA Commercial & Trade Update (CBSA)

COVID-19 Daily Commercial Update to Industry - Stakeholders

Canada Border Services Agency key message is “Borders remain open and commercial operations are ‘business as usual’”.

The CBSA will issue shortly a Customs Notice providing information on the use of the Goods for Emergency Use Remission Order, (C.R.C., c. 768), and application of Tariff Item No. 9993.00.00 of the Customs Tariff in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Remission Order in conjunction with Tariff Item No. 9993.00.00 allows for the relief of duty and tax for goods required for an emergency and are imported by or on behalf of federal, provincial or municipal entities involved such as centres for health care as well as by or on behalf of members of first response organizations such as police, fire and local civil defence groups, including medical response teams.

In the event of unplanned diversions of flights carrying CLVS goods, CBSA will look into reviewing its regular procedures to facilitate release and examination processes.

What CBSA is looking into:
– Addressing concerns of submitting paper documents for processing (TCP and staff availability)
– Addressing health concerns during the importing process
