FDA Struggles to Meet FSMA Foreign Food Facility Inspection Requirements

Each year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is required to inspect a certain number of foreign food facilities under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). FDA has stated that due to the lack of funding, they are unable to conduct the amount of inspections required under the act. FDA has not yet conducted an analysis on how many inspections are needed to ensure the safety of imported food products into the USA.  Without the analysis, FDA cannot be sure if a change in the number of inspections is needed. The agency does not anticipate going beyond 1,200 foreign food facility inspections per year anytime in the near future.
