Canadian Export Reporting System (CERS) – Have you registered?

The Canadian Export Reporting System (CERS) is a free, web-based, self-service portal for submitting electronic export declarations. It replaced the Canadian Automated Export Declaration (CAED) application retired by Statistics Canada in September, 2020.

If you have not registered for exports you will need to do so in order to report exports from Canada.

You will need to confirm if you have an active business number designated for exports.  You can confirm by calling the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) (PH 800.959.5525).  Only a designated individual at the place of business can speak with the CRA.

The CBSA’s Get started with electronic declarations page will help you with your registration needs. Briefly, there are two different routes for getting onboard with CERS.

If you were a user of the old CAED system, you should already have received your CERS activation information. If you haven’t, contact the CBSA at the email address given on the Get Started page.

If you weren’t a CAED user, you’ll have to apply to become a CERS client. To do this, complete form BSF831 and send it to CBSA via the email provided on the form instruction page. Approval normally takes up to five business days.

There are several other resources you can use to help you with CERS.

Guides from CBSA include:

A quick reference guide to CERS

A detailed CERS User Guide, which you can request through one of the CBSA’s client support groups

Export reporting cannot be completed until a company has registered.

Service providers registered for CERS, cannot submit export reporting on behalf of the actual exporter without an authorization ID issued by CBSA.
