March 17, 2020 COVID-19 CBSA Commercial & Trade Update

COVID-19 Daily Commercial Update to Industry – Stakeholders

Canada Border Services Agency key message is “Borders remain open and commercial operations are ‘business as usual’”.

What We Are Looking Into?

– Temporary measures for payments and penalties for duties and taxes, trade verifications, etc.
– Paper processing issues and electronic alternates
– Commercial temporary foreign worker (TFW) drivers being denied entry into the US and Canada

Responses to Your Questions

– The CBSA has recently issued a Customs Notice 20-07 and a TCCU bulletin advising clients that SWI IID may be used for casual/non-commercial importations.

– CBSA will continue to have personnel in locations that normally receive bonds by mail and there will be no disruption to processing bonds received.

– The CBSA will continue CUSMA consultations and implementation preparation and encourages stakeholders to continue to engage the Agency with questions, concerns and to provide advice
while we are working remotely. Ultimately, any decision to delay implementation will not be a CBSA decision but for our part we need to hear from industry to help ensure we are prepared to act and advise internally and to other partner departments of any concerns as they arise
