United States Announces Tariffs on an Additional $200 Billion of China Origin Goods

On July 6th, the United States began collecting 25 percent tariffs on 818 different classifications of goods that were made in China.  These tariffs have an annual trade value of approximately $34 billion. This is known as “List 1.”

On August 7th, the U.S. Trade representative announced that a second list of tariff numbers with an additional 279 classifications is now finalized and will become effective August 23rd, 2018.  This list imposes 25 percent tariff in addition to the regular tariff rates. This second list carries an annual trade value of approximately $16 billion. This is known as “List 2.”

On September 17th, the United States announced that they will take further action by levying an additional 10 percent ad valorem duty on products of China with an annual trade value of approximately $200 billion.  This is known as “List 3” and contains Part 1 and Part 2.

These tariffs go into effect on September 24th, 2018. The initial rate will be set at 10 percent until the end of the year. On January 1st, 2019, the tariffs will rise to 25 percent.  The White House also added, “If China takes retaliatory action against our farmers or other industries, we will immediately pursue phase three, which is tariffs on approximately $267 billion of additional imports. “
