US Senators Urge Agriculture Secretary to Stop Fraudulent Organic Imports

In a letter to US Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, several US Senators have requested that the USDA begins to actively work to prevent fraudulent organic imports in the next Farm Bill.  In this letter, the Senators request an update on what steps the USDA is taking to “address the problem of non-organic products being imported and fraudulently sold to American consumers as USDA certified organic.”  This could begin to signal the first steps in the broadening of the USDA, CBP, and the FDA becoming more engaged in the regulation of ‘certified organic’ importations of fruits, vegetables, and grain commodities.
