Government Passes Legislation to Include UK in the CPTPP

On May 6, 2026, Parliament approved Bill C-13, An Act to implement the Protocol on the Accession of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Once in force, the Act will implement the Protocol on the Accession of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership by updating how that Agreement is defined or referred to in certain Acts and by amending other Acts to bring them into conformity with Canada’s obligations under that Agreement and Protocol.

Among other things, the Act updates the Customs Tariff by adding references to the Comprehensive and Progressive United Kingdom Tariff (CPUKT) and making corresponding amendments to include reference to the CPUKT through the rest of the Tariff and its schedules.

The coming into force date for the Act will be fixed by the Governor in Council.
